The Cookie Race, February 2012, A. Espetveidt, Quadrophonic Image

This past weekend I traveled out to Kananaskis with my husband to volunteer for the 35th Annual Cookie Race. This was my first time I could go although it was Dominique’s 9th year. He started doing it with his Boy Scout group and has been going with them ever since. I had a tonne of fun but it was really busy so I only managed to get a couple of shots of the actual race.

Most of the pictures ended up being taken while driving down the Spray Lakes Road towards Canmore. I have this habit of hanging out the truck window and taking photos while moving. They always seem to have a completely different feel to them.

And here’s a bit of a rant. While driving the back road through, I spotted a car that flipped over the snow bank and was hanging off a steep incline. Of course all three vehicles we were traveling with stopped and we went into rescue mode. Thankfully whoever was in the rental car that went over got out and got a ride, so there was no one there. We knew it just happened because of how much snow had fallen and there wasn’t even a wisp on the roof.  But as we where assessing the situation (we blocked the road for safety, thanks to Darcy) a large van from a dog sledding company through up his hands and cursed at us while driving by. Really! This is a person who takes people into the back country, mostly tourists, during a high avalanche warning, and had no consideration of what could have been a very serious situation. Keep in mind this is the road that killed three people in Dec. 2010. I’d like to think that if I was in a bad situation on the back roads some one would stop to help me, but that man wouldn’t have, and he’s hired to be out there… it makes me so mad.

But the trip was awesome. We got to play in the snow on a wonderful day and give cookies and drinks to all those hard working cross country skiers. They’ve got some serious moxie.
